Wisconsin Editorial Photographer and Wisconsin Commercial Photographer Mike Roemer’s blog.

Hi, I'm Mike Roemer, a commercial, corporate, industrial, agriculture and editorial photographer based in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

I've lived the photography business since childhood, first tagging along during my father's long newspaper photography career before ever carrying my own camera gear. My interest grew as I watched the fascinating process of my dad making black and white images appear while shaking trays of chemicals under the red lights of a developing room.

My professional career started with a ten-year stint as a newspaper photographer meeting tight deadlines, adapting to curve balls and making the famous and not-so-famous comfortable in front of my lens.

I returned to Green Bay in the mid-1990s to start my own business, and now regularly travel around the U.S. and internationally for my clients. I enjoy the creative challenge of combining unusual angles, lighting and lens options to produce the perfect commercial image.

I've won first place awards in Pictures of the Year International, National Press Photographers Best of Photojournalism and National Headliners, along with being a three-time winner in the Pro Football Hall of Fame photo contest.

I love the variety of projects I get to work on, from healthcare organization and foundation annual reports, high-energy casino and gaming shoots, industrial projects at locations as diverse as cheese manufacturers and steel plants, to corporate culture assignments and documenting the Green Bay Packers.

Thanks for looking!

Photos of Bobby McFerrin Performing “Migrations” at Lawrence University • Wisconsin documentary photojournalist

Last week I had the pleasure of taking photos as Bobby McFerrin as he rehearsed and performed “Migrations” at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin with faculty and students.  In my circle McFerrin is best know for Don’t Worry, Be Happy“, but McFerrin is a ten time Grammy winner.  It was a great pleasure to take photos of him playing with the jazz ensemble, studio orchestra and the hybrid ensemble, but even a greater pleasure to listen.

Here are a few of my favorite photos.

Enjoy!

Light and Shadow.

Photography is usually about light and shadow.  On a recent editorial healthcare photography project, it was mostly about Shadow.  A few weeks ago I got a call from a healthcare magazine to do the photography for a story about a Sturgeon Bay cancer survivor and how active she is and the special bond she has with her dog.   The magazine really wanted a nice shot of her interacting with the dog.  She is also very active in the community playing her mandolin.  The magazine expressed that their ideal photo would be her playing her mandolin with her dog at her side or interacting with her.  I called the subject before heading there to scout the location and she warned me that if a new person came into her house, the dog would make a new best friend and ignore her.  That’s exactly what happened during the scouting visit.   During the scout I made a new best friend, a very cute beagle by the name of Shadow.  Yup, from the moment I walked in that door he wanted nothing to do with her and everything to do with me. For this shoot the magazine wanted the subject to look her best so they paid for a hair and makeup stylist and I brought my lighting assistant.  Both Jai, of Refashioned by Jai, and Matt, of Ludtke Photography, are big dog lovers. So our challenge that day was to ignore Shadow.  Sometimes that meant “clearing the set” a.k.a. having Matt and Jai go to another room so the dog would pay attention to his owner.  Our ignoring paid off and when the subject played her mandolin, Shadow came up and put his paws on her knee. I had a very happy editor.  After that Matt, Jai and I could pet Shadow as much as we wanted; we had a happy Shadow!  Later that day we went to a few other locations around town to fill out the story and got some great secondary photos, but no more photos of Shadow.  Below are a few of my favorite photos from the day.Wisconsin Editorial Healthcare Photography 1Ravens Packers FootballRavens Packers Football

Skiing Time Lapse Movie

Here is a fun time lapse movie I shot yesterday at Pine Mountain in Iron Mountain, Michigan of my friend Dave Gagnon taking a run.  The movie is made up of 416 still frames shot at 3 frames per second and then played back at 12 frames per second.    You can view the movie at this link.

Moon over Manitowoc Lighthouse.

While packing up my gear tonight in Manitowoc, Wisconsin after an editorial healthcare photography shoot I noticed the moon just starting to rise over Lake Michigan.  I quickly tossed my cases of lights into the back of the truck and bolted to the ferry dock to try and line the moon up with the lighthouse.  With the dock locked up for the winter I wasn’t able to get far enough north to line the moon up like I wanted and I was a few minutes to late, but I was kind of happy with what I got.  Thanks to my sister-in-law Joan Turba I knew tonight was going to be the brightest moon of the year.  Thanks Joan!

Florida Vacation

This morning it’s 3 degrees below zero in Green Bay.  I couldn’t think of a better time to post my blog about the mini vacation Judy and I just came back from.  We headed to sunny Naples Florida to visit my snowbird parents.  It was a great time to catch up with them, exchange Christmas presents and eat plenty of seafood.  Here are a couple of my favorite photos from the vacation.

Enjoy!
