The Green Bay Packers allowed fans into the stands at Lambeau Field for the first time this year on this past Sunday in their NFL football game against the Chicago Bears. It was only a couple hundred masked up, social distanced fans, but it made a huge difference in the energy level in the stands. They tried to make it as much of a non-Covid game environment with all the usual fan enjoyment things on the scoreboard and over the sound system. I was really hoping the fans would still bust out with their usual Packers/Bears chant of “The Bear Still Suck”, but sadly that didn’t happen.

Sunday morning I was really having a tough time getting excited to shoot the Green Bay Packers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars NFL football game at Lambeau Field. My lack of excitement wasn’t just because the forecast called for rain and high winds, but also because the lack of fans and energy in the stadium due to Covid. Shooting from the stands while trying to keep my glasses from fogging because of wearing a mask has lost its novelty. When I shot my last Packers game a few weeks ago, I was really disappointed with the photos I got. This game I moved around more and tried to find find some different angles. I was happy with some of the different types of shots that I was able to get. I also got some shots of players wearing masks on the benches. I think those are important to document this time in the NFL for history.

The one major plus of being a sport photographer shooting NFL football games during Covid times, is that my knees sure feel better after a Packers games. Over my career, my knees sure have taken a beating kneeling for multiple hours shooting sports. I don’t move around much shooting at Lambeau since my preferred shooting position is the end zone where I have an unblocked view of the entire field. Back in my younger days, I could easily spring up and grab a random feature or a Lambeau Leap, but now I’m guessing the fans in the north end zone of Lambeau think I’m a bajillion year old man as I struggle to get up after rigor mortis sets in to my knees during those cold weather games. This year is totally different; I’m sitting in the front row shooting just a few feet back from my usually spot and just a few feet higher. I’ll be happy to go back to field level when the NFL and the Packers rule it safe, but my knees will be disappointed.

Here are some of my favorite photos from covering the Monday night game between the Green Bay Packers and the Atlanta Falcons. The Packers defeated the Falcons to stay undefeated in the early NFL season at 4-0.

If you would have told me when I walked off of Lambeau Field after the last home game of the 2019 season that the next Packers game I would shoot would be in an empty stadium and I’d be wearing a mask to help to protect me from a world wide pandemic, I would have said you’re nuts. I’ve shot a ton of Packers games over the years and I have a bunch of memories from those games I won’t soon forget, but Sunday’s game is one that will always stand out. Sunday’s game was my first Packers game during Covid. It was totally bizarre in so many ways to document the game in a stadium without fans. I’m usually shooting from field level, but during these times only the team photographers are allowed on the field; the few non-team photographers that are allowed in the stadium are shooting from the stands. Luckily the first row of seats at Lambeau aren’t that high off the field, so we didn’t have as severe of a downward angle as photographers in some other stadiums.

This was also my first sporting event since March 5th, so my skills may have been a tad rusty. Being on the field during a regular NFL game, you hear many things the average fan doesn’t, but that got taken to a new level on Sunday since there was only some faint piped in background noise which did little to disguise the crazy trashing talking between the players.
