Wisconsin Editorial Photographer and Wisconsin Commercial Photographer Mike Roemer’s blog.

Hi, I'm Mike Roemer, a commercial, corporate, industrial, agriculture and editorial photographer based in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

I've lived the photography business since childhood, first tagging along during my father's long newspaper photography career before ever carrying my own camera gear. My interest grew as I watched the fascinating process of my dad making black and white images appear while shaking trays of chemicals under the red lights of a developing room.

My professional career started with a ten-year stint as a newspaper photographer meeting tight deadlines, adapting to curve balls and making the famous and not-so-famous comfortable in front of my lens.

I returned to Green Bay in the mid-1990s to start my own business, and now regularly travel around the U.S. and internationally for my clients. I enjoy the creative challenge of combining unusual angles, lighting and lens options to produce the perfect commercial image.

I've won first place awards in Pictures of the Year International, National Press Photographers Best of Photojournalism and National Headliners, along with being a three-time winner in the Pro Football Hall of Fame photo contest.

I love the variety of projects I get to work on, from healthcare organization and foundation annual reports, high-energy casino and gaming shoots, industrial projects at locations as diverse as cheese manufacturers and steel plants, to corporate culture assignments and documenting the Green Bay Packers.

Photos from the Green Bay Packers vs. the San Francisco 49ers 2010 NFL football game.

Some games all the action seems to happen right in front of you and some games it all seems to happen in the other end zone.  Just like the Dallas Cowboys game all the action happened in the other endzone.  The Packers threatened to score two touchdowns in my end zone, but settled for field goals.  I was happy with some of the non action photos that I came away with and they helped tell the story of a windy cold December day on the Frozen Tundra of Lambeau Field.  The Green Bay Packers defeated the San Francisco 49ers 34-16 wearing their 1929 retro uniforms.

Photos from Wisconsin – Green Bay’s big 69-43 win over Wisconsin in women’s basketball.

Here are a few of my favorite photos from Wisconsin-Green Bay’s women’s basketballs big win over Wisconsin Thursday night Nov. 19, 2010 at the Kress Events Center on the UWGB campus.  Green Bay defeated their cross state rival 69-43.  Green Bay’s Celeste Hoewisch led all players with 22 points, one shy of her career high.  It should be an exciting year covering head coach Matt Bollant and the Phoenix women’s basketball team who’s expectations are high after making it to the second round of the NCAA tournament last year.

Portrait of Davonte King For ESPN The Magazine • Wisconsin Editorial Photographer

I was recently assigned by ESPN The Magazine to shoot a portrait of a high school football player here in Green Bay, Wisconsin for a story they were doing on staph infections.  The subject was Davonte King.  Davonte lost his  left leg below the knee when he was 13 due to a staph infection.  It is speculated that he took a contaminated cleat to the ankle after another player was diagnosed with staph. He currently plays varsity football for Northeastern Wisconsin Lutheran High on a prosthetic leg.

In talking with the assigning editor at the magazine, they had only seen photos of Davonte that didn’t show he had a prosthetic leg.  My goal for the shoot was to show that he has a prosthesis.

Davonte and his coached agreed to let us shoot a portrait of him before a light practice.  Davonte is an easy going kid with a great attitude about life and football with a prosthetic leg.  The day of the shoot he was hobbled by a sprained ankle from a game over the weekend.  I’m not always the brightest bulb on the tree so I asked him which ankle he sprained since it could affect a shot I had already visualized.  A fraction of a second later,  I realized how stupid of a question that was.

We set up for the shot in an open area near the practice field.  Midway through the shoot some of the other players ran past during a training drill.  You could tell Davonte was buds with everybody.  He got teased about getting his picture taken, but he gave it right back to them with a smile on his face.

I knew the shot ESPN wanted was one with the prosthetic leg off.  I was little timid in asking Davonte if we could shoot one like that, but  Davonte was all for it; that was the shot the editor liked and used in the magazine.  I shot that photo a couple different ways, one with him holding the leg and one with the leg on the ground in front of him.  The top photo in the blog is the pose the magazine used.

Photos from the Green Bay Packers vs. the Dallas Cowboys 2010 NFL football game.

Some games all the action seems to happen right in front of you and other nights are like this past Sunday for me.  The Green Bay Packers defeated the Dallas Cowboys 45-7 on Sunday night November 7, 2010, at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.  Five of the Packers touchdowns happened in the South end zone.  The end zone I cover is the North end zone.  That’s the way it goes.

This game was special in that my wife Judy Roemer made it down to the field for the first time.  I got a call from the Fort Worth Star Telegram earlier in the week looking for a card runner.  A card runner brings the media cards with the photographers pictures from the field up to a workroom on the concourse level that picture editors work out of.  During a day game generally the cards are picked up at the end of each quarter.  For a night game like Sunday you run the cards to the editors multiple times each quarter if needed.

My wife Judy and I pose for a photo prior to the game. Judy was the card runner for the Ft Worth Star Telegram during the game (bringing media cards with photos from the photographers on the field to the papers editor). It was fun having Judy on the field and she did a great job and had a great time.

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Donald Driver didn't suit up for the game due to a quadricep injury. It was the first game he missed since 2002.

Photos from John Stewart’s Return To Sanity Rally in Washington, DC.

This past Saturday my wife Judy and I headed to Washington, DC for a weekend of R&R before  Judy attended a meeting for immigrations directors.  Our first stop was John Stewart’s Return To Sanity Rally / Colbert’s March To Keep Fear in the national mall.  Here are a few of my favorite photos of some of the signs including a couple of Judy with a sign she found thrown away towards the end of the rally.  The sign was very fitting for the culinary side of Judy, but the recipe is a tad different from hers.
