Wisconsin Editorial Photographer and Wisconsin Commercial Photographer Mike Roemer’s blog.

Hi, I'm Mike Roemer, a commercial, corporate, industrial, agriculture and editorial photographer based in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

I've lived the photography business since childhood, first tagging along during my father's long newspaper photography career before ever carrying my own camera gear. My interest grew as I watched the fascinating process of my dad making black and white images appear while shaking trays of chemicals under the red lights of a developing room.

My professional career started with a ten-year stint as a newspaper photographer meeting tight deadlines, adapting to curve balls and making the famous and not-so-famous comfortable in front of my lens.

I returned to Green Bay in the mid-1990s to start my own business, and now regularly travel around the U.S. and internationally for my clients. I enjoy the creative challenge of combining unusual angles, lighting and lens options to produce the perfect commercial image.

I've won first place awards in Pictures of the Year International, National Press Photographers Best of Photojournalism and National Headliners, along with being a three-time winner in the Pro Football Hall of Fame photo contest.

I love the variety of projects I get to work on, from healthcare organization and foundation annual reports, high-energy casino and gaming shoots, industrial projects at locations as diverse as cheese manufacturers and steel plants, to corporate culture assignments and documenting the Green Bay Packers.

Thanks for looking!

Here are some of my favorite photos from assignments and personal work in 2010.   The past year was my first full year producing this blog and I’m amazed at the amount of traffic it’s gotten.  My most popular search term was Clay Matthews.  The NFL longhaired linebacker stud of the Green Bay Packers wasn’t just a fan favorite on the field, but also on my blog.

This past year was also my first full year of marriage to my wonderful wife Judy and she was by my side for a few of these photos.  The series of the ice skating nuns I shot while we visited her sister, a sister at Holy Family Convent in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.  That’s her sister Anne taking the tumble.  Judy was also with me during a work/pleasure trip to Germany and Austria.  The almost final photos are from that trip.  That’s Judy with my Uncle Hans and Tante Traudl.  The final photo is one of my favorites.  That’s my mom and dad at a little birthday party for my dad that Judy and I threw for my parents and some of their friends.  I’m glad I strongly encouraged them to put on the hats.

I also want to say thank to my main assistant Matt Ludtke and my main hair and makeup stylist Jai Schmidt of RefashionedByJai.com.  Thanks for all the hard work.

Thanks for checking out my work and I’m looking forward to showing you more of my work  in 2011.

Green Bay Packers linebacker Nick Barnett shows off his fangs.

I made this portrait while on assignment for ESPN The Magazine. The photo is of a high school football player here in Green Bay, Wisconsin for a story they were doing on staph infections. The subject was Davonte King. Davonte lost his left leg below the knee when he was 13 due to a staph infection. It is speculated that he took a contaminated cleat to the ankle after another player was diagnosed with staph. He currently plays varsity football for Northeastern Wisconsin Lutheran High on a prosthetic leg.

I was assigned by a healthcare magazine to a shoot a photo of a wonderful lady by the name of Diane Melang. Diane is a cancer survivor, a musician and has a special bond with her dog Shadow. I was able to get this photo while we did our lighting test for a portrait of her in her Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin home. The client loved the shots.

Judy's sister Anne who is a nun at Holy Family Convent in Manitowoc, WI invited us down for an afternoon of ice skating on Silver Lake. Judy's sister took a tumble and I had a great series of photos. The faces of the nuns that stayed vertical make the shots.

This was for the cover of an annual report for a Missouri healthcare client for a Midwest ad agency that specializes in healthcare. We were able to set up a small studio in a conference room at the hospital and we had our cover shot.

Here is proof that you don't need to shoot pro sports to get great action photos. I got this shot while shooting my niece and nephew's flag football game. I love the look on the faces.

Detroit Lions cornerback Alphonso Smith wins the battle for the ball against Green Bay Packers wide receiver Greg Jennings for an interception.

Green Bay Packers safety Nick Collins and cornerback Sam Shields break up a pass intended for Miami Dolphins wide receiver Davone Bess

Green Bay Packers Sam Shields keeps his eye on the ball during warm up for Family Fun Night. I loved the way the saturated colors with the late day light made such a great background. I'm always looking for something different when I shoot an NFL game.

Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews celebrates a sack during the Detroir Lions game. Clay Matthews, his long hair and his sack celebration became the top search term for my blog in 2010.

Packers Glory Years star quarterback Bart Starr waves his cap during Green Bay Packers alumni introductions at half time of the Buffalo Bills game. I was very happy Bart did his partial turn in my direction as he walked onto the field, smiled and waved his cap.

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre reacts after failing to complete a pass to Randy Moss in the endzone on the final play of the Vikings loss to the Packers

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre walks off Lambeau Field for possibly the last time with his head down after the Vikes lost to the Pack. I covered Brett for 13 years and followed him off the field many times. Sadly my most famous and most used photo of him coming off the field ended up being of him giving his wife, Deanna, a kiss after the snow globe playoff win. The photo was used extensively for stories on Brett's texting habits.

Here is another example of looking for something different during an NFL game. A member of the replay crew tries to keep warm on a cold and windy day on the Frozen Tundra of Lambeau Field.

This is a photo I shot for a sailboat manufacturer for their promotional materials. We set up this shot as the sun set near Egg Harbor in the waters of the bay of Green Bay in Door County, Wisconsin.

I try to steer clear of senior portrait photography, but when a great long time college friend asked me to shoot his daughter's senior pictures in Door County, Wisconsin I accepted the assignment. Who knows, maybe I'll do a few more.

Surfing on Lake Michigan near Sheboygan, Wisconsin after the Midwest got nailed by a huge wind storm. Living and shooting in the Midwest, I don't get much of a chance to shoot surfing.

This is one of my favorite photos from a series I shot for a Green Bay company for a new web site. It was a very spontaneous shot as we approached these two employees as we walked the halls of their corporate office looking for just this type of shot. Shallow depth of field, two great smiles and just a tad of fill light from my assistant and we had a very nice shot.

Photos from the Green Bay Packers vs. the Chicago Bears 2010 NFL football game.

Here are some of my favorite photos that tell the story of the Green Bay Packers 10-3 win over the Chicago Bears on Sunday, January 2, 2011 on the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field on a cold winter day.  The Packers earned a wildcard spot in the NFL play-offs with the win and will play the Philadelphia Eagles in the first round.

Christmas vacation in Naples, Florida.

My wife Judy and I just got back from visiting my parents in Naples, Florida over Christmas.  Having grown up in the Midwest I’m used to having snow around for the winter holidays.  I didn’t shoot a ton of pictures during our week in the sunshine state, but I did keep an eye out for images that would tell the story of Christmas in Florida.  Here are a few of my favorites.

Turba Sister Cookie Baking Weekend.

My wife Judy comes from a large family of nine kids.  Each year the five “Turba” sisters get together for a Christmas cookie baking weekend.  The weekend has grown in size from the five sisters to include the nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews,  a sister-in-law or two and a yellow lab who guards the cookie table.  I was able to invite myself for an afternoon of snitching cookies and bonbons under the premise of taking pictures for my blog.  Here are a few of my favorite photos.

Environmental Portrait Wall Art Project For A Corporate Client.

For the past nine years I’ve been the photographer for a great project that Schreiber Foods is doing for their corporate office here in Green Bay, Wisconsin and their plants around the United States and over seas.  I’ve been shooting environmental portraits of various partners that is used with a quote for wall art.   The business portrait project gives me a great deal of freedom and creativity to come up with an interesting shot.  I generally take just a few minutes of the subjects time and come up with a shallow depth of field shot to make the subject stand out.  Here are a sampling of some of my favorite photos from the past year .
