Wisconsin Editorial Photographer and Wisconsin Commercial Photographer Mike Roemer’s blog.

Hi, I'm Mike Roemer, a commercial, corporate, industrial, agriculture and editorial photographer based in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

I've lived the photography business since childhood, first tagging along during my father's long newspaper photography career before ever carrying my own camera gear. My interest grew as I watched the fascinating process of my dad making black and white images appear while shaking trays of chemicals under the red lights of a developing room.

My professional career started with a ten-year stint as a newspaper photographer meeting tight deadlines, adapting to curve balls and making the famous and not-so-famous comfortable in front of my lens.

I returned to Green Bay in the mid-1990s to start my own business, and now regularly travel around the U.S. and internationally for my clients. I enjoy the creative challenge of combining unusual angles, lighting and lens options to produce the perfect commercial image.

I've won first place awards in Pictures of the Year International, National Press Photographers Best of Photojournalism and National Headliners, along with being a three-time winner in the Pro Football Hall of Fame photo contest.

I love the variety of projects I get to work on, from healthcare organization and foundation annual reports, high-energy casino and gaming shoots, industrial projects at locations as diverse as cheese manufacturers and steel plants, to corporate culture assignments and documenting the Green Bay Packers.

Super Bowl Winning Green Bay Packers Return to Lambeau Field.

Super Bowl excitement continues in Green Bay, Wisconsin.  On Monday, February 7, 2011, thousands of Green Bay Packers fans greeted their Super Bowl winning team back to Lambeau Field.  Here are some of my favorite photos from the event.  The Packers will host a Return To Titletown celebration on Tuesday at Lambeau Field for hopefully a sell out crowd who will be braving single digit temperatures.  The event will include speeches by players and coaches and will be capped off with fireworks.

Super Bowl XLV Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011 in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Here are some of my favorite photos from covering Super Bowl Sunday XLV on Feb. 6 2011 in Green Bay, Wisconsin.   It was a great night for Packers fans and residents of Wisconsin.  I started my shooting day taking pictures of fans getting fired up along Holmgren Way and finished it by recording the wild reveling of celebratory fans on Lombardi Ave in front of Lambeau Field.  At the start of the game, I spent some time with a group of fans who brought some of their living room furniture to the Lambeau Field parking lot to watch the game on a TV on the tailgate of their truck.  I even joined them in a prayer at Kickoff and caught back up with them after the win as they sipped champagne as craziness broke out around them.  In between, I visited some of the bars near the stadium as fans went through some anxious moments and then into complete, all-out celebration when the Packers won 31-25.

Super Bowl Weekend in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

For the past two weeks I’ve been busy working on stories for news agencies and newspapers from the New York Time to the Toronto Star in the lead up to the Super Bowl between the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Stealers.  Many of the photo amounted to what I could get in a few short minutes that the media could photograph the Packers during practice.  I did get some feature photos that I liked, but the below photo is by far my favorite.  The thing that puzzled me is why is he scratching his fake butt?

Ice Fishing on Lake Poygan.

This past weekend, I and a few friends were invited by another friend to join him for an afternoon of ice fishing on Lake Poygan near Oshkosh, Wisconsin.  I had planned on shooting a nice selection of ice fishing photos with big old fish being pulled out of holes drilled in the ice.  Well, the fish didn’t cooperate, but I was able to document the true spirit of ice fishing.  You get to wear a funny hat if you want, you drink a beer or two, you talk about the Packers with your buds and if you’re lucky enough to have a horse sized dog along, you burn off some calories playing tug or war.

President Barack Obama’s visit to Wisconsin.

In the 25 years since I entered the world of editorial photography, I’ve probably covered the President dozen of times.  Back in my days as a staff photographer for a daily newspaper, I was usually in with the local pool that accompanies the President on his visit.  But during my time as a freelancer, most news agencies have  a photographer permanently assigned to travel with the President, so my responsibilities have generally been to capture the arrival and departure of Air Force One.

It’s always exciting to see Air Force One burst out of the clouds and see the choreography of a Presidential motorcade, but the photos usually are nothing more than the President waving from the steps.  We are usually kept a few hundred feet away, shooting from a media platform and we usually get blocked by White House or Secret Service staff as the President shakes hands with the local greeting party.

When the President arrived on Wednesday at Austin Straubel Airport, I could see Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt and Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker both heading his way with Green Bay Packers jerseys as gifts.  I either had my view blocked or the trio faced away from me as the President accepted his gifts, but as they broke apart Mayor Schmitt and President Obama shook hands and enjoyed a little laugh.  I knew I had one of my favorite photos of a Presidential visit when they both flashed those big smiles.
