Wisconsin Editorial Photographer and Wisconsin Commercial Photographer Mike Roemer’s blog.

Hi, I'm Mike Roemer, a commercial, corporate, industrial, agriculture and editorial photographer based in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

I've lived the photography business since childhood, first tagging along during my father's long newspaper photography career before ever carrying my own camera gear. My interest grew as I watched the fascinating process of my dad making black and white images appear while shaking trays of chemicals under the red lights of a developing room.

My professional career started with a ten-year stint as a newspaper photographer meeting tight deadlines, adapting to curve balls and making the famous and not-so-famous comfortable in front of my lens.

I returned to Green Bay in the mid-1990s to start my own business, and now regularly travel around the U.S. and internationally for my clients. I enjoy the creative challenge of combining unusual angles, lighting and lens options to produce the perfect commercial image.

I've won first place awards in Pictures of the Year International, National Press Photographers Best of Photojournalism and National Headliners, along with being a three-time winner in the Pro Football Hall of Fame photo contest.

I love the variety of projects I get to work on, from healthcare organization and foundation annual reports, high-energy casino and gaming shoots, industrial projects at locations as diverse as cheese manufacturers and steel plants, to corporate culture assignments and documenting the Green Bay Packers.

Wisconsin Industrial Photography / Manufacturing Photographer

Here are some of my favorite photos from a recent shoot centering on the manufacturing of tanker trailers.  Commercial photography on an active production floor is always a fun challenge.  With this type of industrial photography, you need to keep in mind that you have to work around their production flow and not the other way around.  My assistant and I tried to work as much as we could with the existing light, but added extra light to give the shots more dimension with various light modifiers and colored gels.  We also took advantage of some of the last nice fall days here in Wisconsin to do some glamour shots of the trailers and a few detail shots.  I even pulled out the tilt shift lenses to do a little selective focus photography.

Not Every Day Can Be Your Day – Green Bay Sports Photographer.

As a sports photographer some days it seems like everything happens right in front of you.  Sunday was the opposite of that for me.  The Packers scored three touchdowns on Sunday, October 16, 2011 at Lambeau Field in their NFL football games against the St. Louis Rams and I was on the opposite end of the field for all three. Even when Clay Matthews did his muscle man / growling animal celebration after his first real quarterback sack of the season he did it with 21 guys between he and I.  I was very happy the Packers won 24-3 and I was happy with some of the non action shots I got, but I was disappointed in the action shots I got.  I’ll get em next game.

Admissions Marketing Photography for St. Norbert College.

This past week I took advantage of some of the great fall weather and color to work on an admissions marketing photography project for St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin.   Higher education photography is a lot of fun and St. Norbert’s has some great places to shoot the photos they will use as admissions marketing photography, college web site photography and various collections for their image library.  About 80% of these photos are from students that we placed in shots and the other 20% are photos I grabbed as we moved locations.

Here are a few of my favorite shots.

Casino Photography at Casino at Ocean Downs / Casino Photographer

Here are some of my favorite photos from a recent lifestyle gaming and casino photo shoot at Casino at Ocean Downs near Ocean City, Maryland.  Gaming photography adds a nice mix to the type of work I do.  We did this shoot while the casino was open as we do with most of these casino photo shoots.  That can add a challenge to keep non model released people out of your shots and finding places for your lights that aren’t in the way of patrons.

I often have other photographers ask how many lights I use for these types of shoots.  We travel with three cases of lighting gear that contains six lights and light modifiers up to a 74″ Elinchrom Octa Light Bank.  We use a variety of colored gels from full CTB cool to  full CTO warm to add more dimension to the photos.  For lenses, we shoot with everything from a 15mm fisheye to a 300mm F2.8 and have a selection of tilt shift lenses to do some selective focus shots.  When I say we, I’m talking about me and my assistant.  Between the two of us, we can carry two computer bags and two roller bags of camera gear on the plane with us and then check the three cases of lighting gear and one suitcase.

This shoot was a one day shoot with four professional models and a great selection of employees that work at the casino.    I will also use my assistant or other people helping with the shoot to place them in front of patrons of the casino so we don’t have anyone in the photos that isn’t model released.

While on this shoot my client, gave me a great compliment.  I can’t remember it exactly, but the gist of it was that to be a good casino photographer or gaming photographer, you have to also be a good producer and that I was.  On these type of shoots, you need to give your models great direction and you need to keep them excited.  You need to keep the shoot fun and high energy.  I would hate to hear a recording of what I sound like on these shoots.  I yell (in a good way) at the models to keep them excited, cheering and looking good.  Yes, I have tossed out the phrase “Show me the money” or “Work it! Work it!”,  but to me it works so much better if the person behind the camera is doing the directing and producing for these types of shoots.

Photos from the Green Bay Packers vs Denver Broncos NFL Football Game.

The Green Bay Packers defeated the Denver Broncos 49-23 on Sunday, October 2nd , 2011 in an NFL football game to go 4-0.  Quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw for four touchdowns and rushed for two more.  Covering the game I need to get the usual game telling action shots, but for this game I also needed to include the pink ribbons on various items from the game balls to towels.  The ribbons are for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Before kickoff I got a call that the new security measures were causing some very long lines outside of the stadium.  I was able to get to the top level of the stadium and get some telling over all shots of the long lines.
