Wisconsin Editorial Photographer and Wisconsin Commercial Photographer Mike Roemer’s blog.

Hi, I'm Mike Roemer, a commercial, corporate, industrial, agriculture and editorial photographer based in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

I've lived the photography business since childhood, first tagging along during my father's long newspaper photography career before ever carrying my own camera gear. My interest grew as I watched the fascinating process of my dad making black and white images appear while shaking trays of chemicals under the red lights of a developing room.

My professional career started with a ten-year stint as a newspaper photographer meeting tight deadlines, adapting to curve balls and making the famous and not-so-famous comfortable in front of my lens.

I returned to Green Bay in the mid-1990s to start my own business, and now regularly travel around the U.S. and internationally for my clients. I enjoy the creative challenge of combining unusual angles, lighting and lens options to produce the perfect commercial image.

I've won first place awards in Pictures of the Year International, National Press Photographers Best of Photojournalism and National Headliners, along with being a three-time winner in the Pro Football Hall of Fame photo contest.

I love the variety of projects I get to work on, from healthcare organization and foundation annual reports, high-energy casino and gaming shoots, industrial projects at locations as diverse as cheese manufacturers and steel plants, to corporate culture assignments and documenting the Green Bay Packers.

Photos From Wisconsin Green Bay’s 66-53 Win Over Detroit In The Horizon League Women’s Basketball Championship.

Here are some of my favorite photos from covering Wisconsin – Green Bay’s  66-53 win over Detroit in the Horizon League Women’s Basketball Championship on Sunday March 11, 2012 in front of over 3,400 fans at the Kress Event Center in Green Bay.  Detroit was the only team to beat Green Bay during their 30-1 regular season.  Green Bay will find out on Monday night March 12th, 2012 who they will face in their 13th NCAA tournament.  Green Bay made it as far at the sweet sixteen last year.  With a rank of 10th in the AP poll at the end of the season and a strong RPI Green Bay hope to get a 3 or 4 seed in the tournament.

Green Bay senior forward Julie Wojta was the biggest star of the afternoon — she had 29 points, 12 rebounds and four steals and was the tournament MVP.  Freshman Megan Lukan’s career-high 20 points provided an impressive supplement to Wojta’s  29-point effort as the duo sparked a Phoenix rally from a 30-27 halftime deficit.

Thanks for taking a look and Go Phoenix!

Live Surgery Photography For A Midwest Healthcare Client.

Here are a couple favorite photos of mine from some live surgeries I shot last week as part of an ortho campaign for a healthcare client in Missouri.  Surprisingly to most of the people that know me this type of photography is something I enjoy a great deal.  Live surgeries are always fun and interesting to me.  Those that know me know I cringe even if someone tells me that they got a shot of I see something as simple as someone getting their teeth cleaned on TV.   For most of the healthcare photography that I do and the surgery shots you may see on my web site  or blog are from fake surgeries staged for photo shoots.  In those type of scenarios I can be mush more creative with my lighting and have a great deal more access to other vantage points in the room to shoot from.  In a live surgery you basically get gowned up like the medical staff and go in with a couple of camera bodies and a couple of lenses and work with the available light and try to work an interesting photograph from the non sterile areas of the operating room.  I’ve photographed everything from c sections, to heart bypass, to orthoscopic shoulder, total knee replacement to brain surgery.  When the patient is on that table they are so draped over and are so far removed from looking like a human.  Plus it’s just so interesting to see how they do things like knee replacements or a heart bypass.

While doing this type of healthcare photography you do need to keep in mind that you can’t be to graphic so that the photos can actually be used for things like ad campaigns or web sites.  The bright surgery lights usually help with this since they usually are so bright and wash out the actual point of surgery.  It can be tough to show the face of the doctor since they are usually very covered up and usually looking down.

Wisconsin- Green Bay Women’s Basketball Photos.

Here are some of my favorite photos from covering two Wisconsin – Green Bay women’s basketball games last week.  Green Bay is ranked 9th in the AP top 25 for D1 women’s college basketball teams.  On Thursday night Green Bay lost to Detroit 70-58 suffering its first loss on its home court in 28 games and first regular season loss in 41 games.  On Saturday afternoon Green Bay got back on a winning track with a 64-59 win over Wright State.  Julie Wojta had a career-high 30 points, 20 rebounds, four blocks while matching a career-high 40 minutes of play.

Last year Green Bay made it as far of the sweet sixteen.  It will be exciting covering their conference tournament and seeing if they can again make a run in the NCAA tournament.

Modeling Portfolio Photo Shoot With Model Amy Hayes

Here are some of my favorite photos I did as a collaborative effort with Wisconsin hair and makeup artist Jai Schmidt of Refashioned by Jai and model Amy Hayes.  Amy approached me about shooting a set of image for her modeling portfolio.  My schedule doesn’t always allow me to do these types of modeling photo shoots, but January is generally a slower time of the year, so I took on the project.  After a meeting with Jai and Amy I knew we would come up with a great set of images for Amy, but also ones that Jai and I could use for our web sites and promo materials.

I think Amy has a look that will allow her to get work from clients looking for someone in her late teens to mid 20s. One of looks that I wanted to show Amy in to set her images apart from what I see on other modeling sites was a young healthcare professional.  I do a great deal of photography for the healthcare industry and I know that clients looking for models with these types of photos get frustrated with the lack of what’s available in modeling portfolios.

I put a couple of the images up on my web site about a week ago and I already scheduled one job from a client looking for that same type of medical look for an ad.  Amy has gotten some very positive responses from some local and regional ad agencies.

This entire shoot from the time Amy arrived at our location to the time she left, took about six hours.  Jai spent about the first hour with Amy going through wardrobe and doing hair and makeup.

Chica In The Snow.

I shot this photo a few weeks ago as I loaded my truck at home for a photo shoot.  That’s my wife Judy’s and my pup, Chica, who loves snow.  I couldn’t post the photo till now since I gave Judy a gallery wrap of the photo for her birthday.

Thanks for taking a look!
