Wisconsin Editorial Photographer and Wisconsin Commercial Photographer Mike Roemer’s blog.

Hi, I'm Mike Roemer, a commercial, corporate, industrial, agriculture and editorial photographer based in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

I've lived the photography business since childhood, first tagging along during my father's long newspaper photography career before ever carrying my own camera gear. My interest grew as I watched the fascinating process of my dad making black and white images appear while shaking trays of chemicals under the red lights of a developing room.

My professional career started with a ten-year stint as a newspaper photographer meeting tight deadlines, adapting to curve balls and making the famous and not-so-famous comfortable in front of my lens.

I returned to Green Bay in the mid-1990s to start my own business, and now regularly travel around the U.S. and internationally for my clients. I enjoy the creative challenge of combining unusual angles, lighting and lens options to produce the perfect commercial image.

I've won first place awards in Pictures of the Year International, National Press Photographers Best of Photojournalism and National Headliners, along with being a three-time winner in the Pro Football Hall of Fame photo contest.

I love the variety of projects I get to work on, from healthcare organization and foundation annual reports, high-energy casino and gaming shoots, industrial projects at locations as diverse as cheese manufacturers and steel plants, to corporate culture assignments and documenting the Green Bay Packers.

Thanks for looking!

Photos From Green Bay Packers Minicamp June 2012.

This week I spent a couple of days at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin for a few editorial and corporate photography clients with part of that time spent photographing their minicamp.  I love shooting NFL football games, but photographing practices can get a little boring.   I did get a few photos that I really like, onse that I thought showed a little of the personality of the payers or showed their concentration.

It won’t be long and the 2012 NFL football season will be here

Thanks for looking!

The Challenges of Manufacturing Photography • Wisconsin Industrial Photographer

Manufacturing photography can have it’s challenges.  I was recently asked by a large manufacturer of automated lasers to take a photo of one of their lasers in action at a metal fabrication facility in Wisconsin.  The shoot had a couple of big hurdles to get around;  the main issue was that in order for the machine to run, it had to be totally enclosed leaving no access to shoot a photo from outside of it.   The unit did have windows, but they were heavily tinted green and darkened down.  You could see through the windows, but getting a quality advertising photography shot would have been a challenge.

I’ve set up my share of remote cameras working as a sports photographer, but I haven’t had to set up many remote cameras as a midwest manufacturing photographer.  The unit had enough room that we were able to mount a Canon 5D Mark 3 with a 50mm lens inside the machine, and set it into place with a Bogen Super clamp and a Manfrotto Extension Arm.    We had a small port to run a cable out of the machine so we could tether the camera to our laptop computer, monitor our photos and adjust exposure through Abobe Lightroom.  We also mounted two LumaPro LP160 strobes suction cupped into place and triggered them with Pocket Wizards to give the unit some dimension.   We also fired one large, color corrected strobe, a Elinchrom 600 RX with a 30 degree grid, from outside the machine to eliminate the green of the windows, but then we also added some red to just make it a little more sexy.

Here is my favorite photo from the shoot.

Environmental Portrait Photo Shoot For The Roberts Group

I was recently asked by one of my favorite clients to create a series of portraits of key members of their staff for their web site.  The client, The Roberts Group, a Milwaukee, Wisconsin based marketing and advertising agency has been a great client for over ten year so I was honored that they asked me to work on this project with them.

Here are a handful of my favorite environmental portraits from the photo shoot at their Waukesha, Wisconsin office.  I worked closely with, Mike Andes, the lead designer on the project  to come up with a fun and creative photos that brought out the personality of each subject.

Thanks for taking a look!

Photos From The 2012 Bolder Boulder 10k Road Race.

Here are some of my favorite photos from the 2012 Boulder Boulder 10k road race in Boulder, Colorado.  I’m in Boulder for the weekend spending time with family before a multi media seminar at CU, but I could resist going down on to Pearl Street, a few block from my brother house, to take in a little of the action.  The Bolder Boulder is one of the nations biggest races with over 50,000 runners.

Photos From The 2012 Cellcom Green Bay Marathon • Marathon Photographer.

Here are some of my favorite photos from the 2012 Cellcom Green Bay Marathon and half marathon.  Close to 10,000 runners ran in this year’s event in unseasonably warm weather for Green Bay, Wisconsin.  With the high almost 20 degrees warmer than the average for the middle of May in Green Bay, the course was closed less than three hours into the event due to a strain on medical staffing for numerous runners dealing with heat related issues.  Over 3,000 runners in the half marathon finished before the course was closed and only the elite runners finished the full marathon.

Except for one year, I’ve covered this race each year for the marathon and the title sponsor.  I could tell the heat was hitting the runners hard when I went to shoot at a slight uphill portion of the course about a third of the way through;  it was very quiet and many people were walking.  Race officials put more fluid stations on the course than ever before, along with supplying ice, but a breeze that was forecast to develop mid morning never did.  Residents of the Green Bay area came out to support the runners and supplied sprinklers and hoses to help cool them down.

From a photographer’s standpoint, the race made great photos.  The water shots on the course made for some nice images (maybe I posted too many to the blog) and the people that finished, even though the course had been closed, seemed happier than usual.   Back in my newspaper days, I would have been all over the drama of the heat exhaustion, but from a promotion standpoint for the marathon, I thought it was more important to tell the positive aspects of the race.
Due to a major renovation at Lambeau Field, the race didn’t finish with a loop around the frozen tundra as it has in years past, which always makes for great photos.  That aspect of the race will be back next year; hopefully the heat won’t.
