Wisconsin Editorial Photographer and Wisconsin Commercial Photographer Mike Roemer’s blog.

Hi, I'm Mike Roemer, a commercial, corporate, industrial, agriculture and editorial photographer based in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

I've lived the photography business since childhood, first tagging along during my father's long newspaper photography career before ever carrying my own camera gear. My interest grew as I watched the fascinating process of my dad making black and white images appear while shaking trays of chemicals under the red lights of a developing room.

My professional career started with a ten-year stint as a newspaper photographer meeting tight deadlines, adapting to curve balls and making the famous and not-so-famous comfortable in front of my lens.

I returned to Green Bay in the mid-1990s to start my own business, and now regularly travel around the U.S. and internationally for my clients. I enjoy the creative challenge of combining unusual angles, lighting and lens options to produce the perfect commercial image.

I've won first place awards in Pictures of the Year International, National Press Photographers Best of Photojournalism and National Headliners, along with being a three-time winner in the Pro Football Hall of Fame photo contest.

I love the variety of projects I get to work on, from healthcare organization and foundation annual reports, high-energy casino and gaming shoots, industrial projects at locations as diverse as cheese manufacturers and steel plants, to corporate culture assignments and documenting the Green Bay Packers.

Thanks for looking!

Photos From The Green Bay Packers vs Jacksonville Jaguars NFL Football Game.

Today,  I got what I would say is my favorite NFL photo in the past five or six years.  The shot is the top one in the blog of Donald Driver doing a Leambeau Leap.  I love the interaction of Driver with the fans, the look in his eyes and his tongue. What makes the photo even more special is Driver may be in his last year in the NFL and he has taken a lesser roll in the offense.   So when he finally found the end zone, it was really cool; he was one happy guy.

Today I had to split my time between shooting the game and editing.  I didn’t get as many shots that I loved as usual, but the ones I liked I really liked.  The second shot in the blog of the sun reflecting into coach Mike McCarthy’s face I really like.  Maybe it’s a photographer thing, but I just love the way the shot is lit.

The first picture I edited today is the last one in the blog and kind of sums up the game.  The Packers defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 24-15, but to me it was kind of a yawner.

Thanks for looking!

Green Bay Men’s and Women’s Basketball Portraits • Sportrait Photography

Basketball season is just around the corner.  I’m kind of excited to cover an NBA game this weekend, but even more than that I’m excited to cover the Green Bay Phoenix women’s basketball team as they kick off their year with an exhibition game.  The Green Bay women have the nation’s longest streak for regular season conference championships and were ranked in the top 10 at the end of last season for NCAA D1 women’s team.  Green Bay is also my alma mater so maybe I’m a bit biased.  The team has coach Kevin Borseth coming back to the program after stepping away for a few years to coach at Michigan in the Big Ten.

To kick things off, here is a blog of some of my favorite portraits / sportraits I shot mid summer for a magazine on the two athletic programs;  this will be available at Green Bay home games.  The portrait shoot was a fun one to do.  My assistant and I needed to keep things flowing and come up with a couple of options for four different pairs of players (Alec Brown and Adrian Ritchie, Kiefer Sykes and Megan Luken, Cam Cerroni and Lydia Bauer and Brennan Cougill and Sarh Eichler), plus get a few portraits of each player alone.  We set up a couple of different shooting areas that we could quickly adjust to get different looks.  Two things that worked to our advantage was a great reflection on the basketball court and some natural sweat (that’s real sweat running down Brennan Cougill’s face) due to late summer heat and humidity.

I tried to bring out a little of each player’s personality by joking around with them, and I think that paid off as you will see in a few of the shots, but one of my favorite shots is of Alec Brown and Adrian Ritchie waiting for me to check out a light test.

Thanks for looking and “Go Phoenix”!

Photos of The Green Bay CityDeck • Green Bay Architectural Photographer

Last week I got a call from a couple of clients to shoot a series of photo of phase 2 of the Green Bay CityDeck that was just completed in downtown Green Bay, Wisconsin.  We had a narrow window between when phase 2 would be completed and the docks would be pulled out for a quickly approaching winter.  The weather gods greeted me with calm winds, a dark blue cloudy sky and warm late day light when I took this series of landscape architectural photos.  I was happy, my clients are happy and the Green Bay community should be very happy that they have this cool downtown area to help enjoy the Fox River and help revitalize the area.

Behind The Scenes Photos • Filming Of A Wisconsin Department Of Tourism Ad • Featuring Jordy Nelson • Directed By Jerry Zucker.

I was very excited when I was contacted by the Milwaukee Business Journal to shoot a behind the scenes story on the filming of a TV commercial for the Wisconsin Department of Tourism.  The reason for me being excited about shooting this project wasn’t that the star would be Green Bay Packers Jordy Nelson, but that the spot would be directed by Jerry Zucker.  Jerry Zucker and his brother David directed slapstick comedies that are high on my list like Airplane and The Naked Gun.  The brothers are Wisconsin natives and even though they current live in California still have a love for Wisconsin and are willing to take on these projects.  David directed two earlier spots.

Packers players only get one day a week off during the NFL season and we only have peak fall colors for a few week so even with one of the rainiest days in months the filming went on.  I felt bad for the crew that need to deal with these elements.   I was happy that I need to be just an editorial photographer for the day and didn’t have to haul out the gear I use for my commercial work in the wet weather.

Here are a few shots from the day!

Show A Little Excitement, A Little Energy!

My wife Judy and I spent the a great fall day in Door County, Wisconsin today.  The day wasn’t about me shooting Door County stock photography, but more about the two of us just getting out of town for the day.  One shot I couldn’t pass up was a long lens shot down a great back road with a ton of fall color.  I think Judy was okay with me pulling the truck over for a few minutes to grab a few shots and she seemed okay with it when I asked her to walk down the road for me to get a human element in it.  The shot below is what I got when I asked her to show a little excitement, a little energy.  If only every model I used showed this much excitement and energy in a shot.
