Wisconsin Editorial Photographer and Wisconsin Commercial Photographer Mike Roemer’s blog.

Hi, I'm Mike Roemer, a commercial, corporate, industrial, agriculture and editorial photographer based in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

I've lived the photography business since childhood, first tagging along during my father's long newspaper photography career before ever carrying my own camera gear. My interest grew as I watched the fascinating process of my dad making black and white images appear while shaking trays of chemicals under the red lights of a developing room.

My professional career started with a ten-year stint as a newspaper photographer meeting tight deadlines, adapting to curve balls and making the famous and not-so-famous comfortable in front of my lens.

I returned to Green Bay in the mid-1990s to start my own business, and now regularly travel around the U.S. and internationally for my clients. I enjoy the creative challenge of combining unusual angles, lighting and lens options to produce the perfect commercial image.

I've won first place awards in Pictures of the Year International, National Press Photographers Best of Photojournalism and National Headliners, along with being a three-time winner in the Pro Football Hall of Fame photo contest.

I love the variety of projects I get to work on, from healthcare organization and foundation annual reports, high-energy casino and gaming shoots, industrial projects at locations as diverse as cheese manufacturers and steel plants, to corporate culture assignments and documenting the Green Bay Packers.

Thanks for looking!

Door County Photographer • Photos From The 2013 Jacksonport Polar Bear Polar Plunge.

Here are some of my favorite photos from taking in the Jacksonport Polar Bear Club polar plunge in Door County, Wisconsin that has taken place every New Years Day since 1987.  The first year it was just one lone soul, J.R. Jarosh, and got very little attention.  Today it’s the largest polar plunge in Wisconsin with about 700 polar bears and one of the largest in the nation.  The swimmers took to the waters at high noon with Lake Michigan a balmy 32 degrees and the air 24 degrees.

Wisconsin Social Media Photographer • Photos Of The Hamilton Wood Type Museum in Two Rivers, Wisconsin.

About a month ago, I was doing some editing with my intern Jayavarapu “Bobby” Prabhakar and he mentioned that one of his goals before going back to India was to visit the Hamilton Wood Type Museum.  Bobby is from Hyderabad, India and is a photo student at Northeastern Wisconsin Technical College in Green Bay, Wisconsin.  I had never heard of the museum and was very surprised that the museum is in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, a short drive from Green Bay.  I took a few minutes out from editing and went to their web site only to learn that the museum was being forced to move and would be closing the end of the year in hope of finding a new location. If I can make the trip to Two Rivers “Trivers”, Wisconsin for the amazing ribs and properly served Germany bier at Kurtz’s Pub, I could make the trip with Bobby before the end of the year so he could check it off his bucket list.

I had been across the street from the museum a number of times taking in the home of the ice cream sundae; Two Rivers is one of two cities in the United States taking claim to “home of the sundae”.  Despite that, I had never even noticed the museum with it’s subtle sign and entrance.  When I visited their web site, I noticed that just about every graphic designer in my circle was a friend of theirs. Bobby’s friends in India had even heard of it and were jealous that Bobby was going to be able to visit it.

Bobby and I made a trek down to “Trivers” the week before Christmas, when Bobby finished up with classes for the semester, and took a look around.   Bobby really wanted to print something on the presses.  That wasn’t something you could do everyday at the museum, but something we could do at their closing/moving party on December 30th.  This prompted us to take another road trip yesterday.  Here are some of my favorite photos; this first photo is of Bobby and the poster he printed.  We also found out some good news that the museum will be opening in a new location in Two Rivers this summer.

Photos From The Green Bay Packers vs Tennessee Titans NFL Football Game.

Lighting is a major part of photography.  During my commercial photography or advertising photography photo shoots I have a truck full of lights and light modifiers to create the light I want, but in sports photography for the most part you have to deal with the light that’s given to you.  On Sunday during the Green Bay Packers vs Tennessee Titans the lighting gods shined down on my end zone. When Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers took the ball in the red zone and ran it in for a touchdown it was amazing light.  Okay maybe my editor and I were the only ones that saw it that way.  The fans just saw it as a great play by a great quarterback, but to the photographers looking at my blog look at that light on that series of pictures.  Crazy light accomplished by low late December light bouncing off the glass of the luxury boxes back on to the field.

Okay enough talk about the light.  Here are some of my favorite photos from a blow out win by the Packers.  Plenty of action on my end of the field.  The Packers won’t find out till after the final week of the season if they will host a game in the wild card round or the divisional round.  I just hope that whenever the game is we either have amazing light like this again or a blizzard like we had a week ago.  I’ve shot enough games in boring flat overcast light.

Happy holidays to everyone and thanks for looking!

Green Bay Phoenix Defeats The Marquette Golden Eagles.

The Green Bay Phoenix men’s basketball team defeated the Marquette Golden Eagles Wednesday night December 20, 2012 in an NCAA D1 basketball game at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin.  Green Bay has gone through a tough stretch lately with a series of road games so knocking off the in state rival Marquette is a big deal.  As a Green Bay sports photographer it’s exciting to see Green Bay bring in teams like Butler, Wisconsin and Marquette and defeating them in the past few years.  Green Bay coach Brain Wardle was a standout player for Marquette so that added to the story line.

Here are a few of my favorite photos from covering the game.
