Wisconsin Editorial Photographer and Wisconsin Commercial Photographer Mike Roemer’s blog.

Hi, I'm Mike Roemer, a commercial, corporate, industrial, agriculture and editorial photographer based in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

I've lived the photography business since childhood, first tagging along during my father's long newspaper photography career before ever carrying my own camera gear. My interest grew as I watched the fascinating process of my dad making black and white images appear while shaking trays of chemicals under the red lights of a developing room.

My professional career started with a ten-year stint as a newspaper photographer meeting tight deadlines, adapting to curve balls and making the famous and not-so-famous comfortable in front of my lens.

I returned to Green Bay in the mid-1990s to start my own business, and now regularly travel around the U.S. and internationally for my clients. I enjoy the creative challenge of combining unusual angles, lighting and lens options to produce the perfect commercial image.

I've won first place awards in Pictures of the Year International, National Press Photographers Best of Photojournalism and National Headliners, along with being a three-time winner in the Pro Football Hall of Fame photo contest.

I love the variety of projects I get to work on, from healthcare organization and foundation annual reports, high-energy casino and gaming shoots, industrial projects at locations as diverse as cheese manufacturers and steel plants, to corporate culture assignments and documenting the Green Bay Packers.

Happily Ever After Animal Sanctuary Video

To survive one most evolve. For a photographer in today’s world part of that evolving and surviving is learning how to shoot and edit video. For the past few years I’ve been shooting some short interviews and b-roll pieces for clients when asked and I’ve done a few time lapse movies. Last fall I mentioned to the public relation and marketing people for a cause I believe greatly in that I would like to do a multi media piece for them. I’d been doing still photography for various projects of theirs for the past few year. The organization Happily Ever After Animal Sanctuary is near and dear to my heart. The no-kill shelter is based about an hour north of Green Bay, but has a satellite adoption center here in Green Bay and is the shelter we got our dog from.

I created this piece with some of the still photography I’d been doing over the years and with the help and collaboration of my assistant Matt Ludtke and my intern Jayavarapu “Bobby” Prabhakar we shot some additional b-roll, did a two camera interview and edited this piece.

I’m happy with the piece for out first attempt of something like this, the shelter is very happy to have it as a piece to tell their story and we learned a great deal that we will be able to apply as we move forward.

Take a look and let me know what you think.

Thanks!

Stepping Away From The Action And Trying To Be More Creative • Sports Photographer

On Saturday I had the chance to step away from shooting mainly action at the Green Bay Phoenix women’s basketball game against UIC on Carol’s Court at the Kress Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin.  Green Bay won the game 99-53 so I shot a little action to document that, but for the most part I tried to be creative with some very shallow depth of field with a Canon 85mm F1.2 and two tilt shift lenses, the Canon TS-E 24mm F3.5 and the Canon TS-E 17mm F4.  The tilt shift lens allow you to select a point of focus on your frame by tilting the plane of focus.  The 85mm F1.2 when shot wide open allows you to have a very shallow depth of field and gives you an amazing boken.

Here are some of my favorite photos from the game.  Next weekend it’s back to shooting mostly action as both the Green Bay men’s and women’s teams continue their pursuit  for the Horizon League conference championships.

Green Bay Wisconsin Aerial Photographer • Winter Aerial Photography

Earlier this week I needed to do some aerial photography for a client in Green Bay, Wisconsin.  The minimum rental for the Cessana 172 was an hour so I decided to take the spare time after I completed the clients photos to fly around the snow covered rural landscape near Green Bay and the waters of the lower part of the bay of Green Bay to look for some artistic shots.  Even though I did the shoot at the time of the day when the sun is at it’s highest peak it still casted some very long shadows.

If you’re going to do winter aerial photography remember to bring a pair of gloves.  With a high winged plane like the Cessna 172 you can open up your window. Once you point that camera out the window your going to get hit with some winds in the range of 80 mph from the forward speed of the plane.  So with the temps in the mid 20s and an 80 mph wind your dealing with a wind chill well below zero.

Photos Of The Green Bay Packers Defeating The Minnesota Vikings In The NFL Playoffs.

The Green Bay Packers defeated the Minnesota Viking 24-10 Saturday night January 5, 2013 at Lambeau Field in the wildcard round of the NFL football playoffs.  I’m very happy the Packers won and that they will move on to the divisional round, but it was a boring game for photos.  I had two of the three Packers touchdowns happen in my end zone and they made for okay photos and they sure made for a much better photo then the one Vikings touchdown did of a lone player with not a Packers player within 20 yards of him running into the end zone.

It was sad to see Packers wide receiver Donald Driver a healthy inactive for the game.  Driver has been a great player for the Packers over the years and has been the focus of some of my favorite Packers photos.  It was great to see Packers Charles Woodson back out on the field after recovering from a mid season injury.  The odds of both those veteran players being back next year are slim.

Unless the Atlanta Falcons loose this weekend the Packers will be on the road for the remainder of the playoffs so this may be my last game day blog for the 2013 season.  It was a fun season and I’m happy with the photos I made.

Green Bay Wisconsin Commercial Photographer and Wisconsin Editorial Photographer Mike Roemer • Best of 2012 • Photos That Are Important To Me.

Ever since I started my blog back in 2009, I’ve been doing a year-end blog post of my favorite photos for that year.  The photos aren’t only my best work for that year, but also pictures that are important to me.  The majority of the photos are made while on assignment for clients, but some of the photos are also made during my personal time.  Time that I spent with my wife Judy, my energetic black lab mix pup Chica, the international students that I’ve helped mentor for the college Judy works at or the family Caribbean cruise we took to celebrate my parents, 50th wedding anniversary all made the list this year.

I think going through a year’s worth of your work is a great exercise for a photographer to do.  I hated doing it back in my newspaper days before the digital age.  Digging through clips and negatives, slides and prints wasn’t as easy as pulling up my online portfolio and previous blog posts.  Back in my newspaper days, I was terrible at shooting photos that weren’t meant to be printed in the paper.  Sadly, my life back then revolved around working at the paper.  I wasn’t married to a fun loving woman who lets me point the camera at her, I didn’t have a photogenic dog and I didn’t live near family and friends who’s life I shared like I do today.

I still need to get better at just taking pictures for creative expression and pictures to document my life.  I write this as I see three deer walking though the forest about a 150 feet from my office window.  They walk through that same spot every few days, just tempting me to get a nice photo of them.

I’ve had a few people ask me recently what my favorite photo is from my work in 2012.  Most years, that’s a tough question for me to answer, but not this year.  The top picture in my blog of Green Bay Packers Donald Driver doing a Lambeau Leap is by far my favorite picture of the year.  It’s probably my favorite picture that I’ve ever shot at a Packers game since I started photographing them back in the 80s.  The Sporting News also picked it as one of their top sports photos in 2012 and NBC News also included it in their pictures of the year.

Back in my newspaper days it was hard for me to drive anywhere without a camera in the car.  I’ve finally stopped having anxiety dreams of spot news happening in front of me and not being able to load film into the camera, to get the car keys to open the trunk or not being able to find the car.  That said, the best camera you have is the one you have with you.  I always have my smart phone with me, so I always have that camera on me.  So for 2013, I’m going to do a picture-a-day Instagram project, if things get straightened out with their new terms of service.  The photos will be a creative outlet for me, but also a way to document my life.  Every month or two, I’ll put up a blog post with some of the Instgram photos.  You can also follow RoemerPhoto or Mike Roemer on Instgram if you don’t want to wait for the blogpost.

So, here are my favorite photos of 2012 – photos that are important to me.

I’ve covered the north end zone at Lambeau Field since the mid 90s. My shots are generally backlit, which I’m okay with, but since they did a remodel of the stadium last off-season, we get some crazy great bounce light that adds a special dimension to the photos in the red zone. Here is one of those photos as Aaron Rodgers makes an adjustment at the line.
