Wisconsin Editorial Photographer and Wisconsin Commercial Photographer Mike Roemer’s blog.

Hi, I'm Mike Roemer, a commercial, corporate, industrial, agriculture and editorial photographer based in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

I've lived the photography business since childhood, first tagging along during my father's long newspaper photography career before ever carrying my own camera gear. My interest grew as I watched the fascinating process of my dad making black and white images appear while shaking trays of chemicals under the red lights of a developing room.

My professional career started with a ten-year stint as a newspaper photographer meeting tight deadlines, adapting to curve balls and making the famous and not-so-famous comfortable in front of my lens.

I returned to Green Bay in the mid-1990s to start my own business, and now regularly travel around the U.S. and internationally for my clients. I enjoy the creative challenge of combining unusual angles, lighting and lens options to produce the perfect commercial image.

I've won first place awards in Pictures of the Year International, National Press Photographers Best of Photojournalism and National Headliners, along with being a three-time winner in the Pro Football Hall of Fame photo contest.

I love the variety of projects I get to work on, from healthcare organization and foundation annual reports, high-energy casino and gaming shoots, industrial projects at locations as diverse as cheese manufacturers and steel plants, to corporate culture assignments and documenting the Green Bay Packers.

Wisconsin Triathlon Photographer • Photos From The 2013 Door County Triathlon.

Here are some of my favorite photos form covering the 2013 Door County Triathlon.  I covered the event for the race for their needs in promoting the event in future years.   The course is a half ironman course so the participants swim 1.2 miles, bike 56.3 miles and run 13.1 miles.  It’s a fun event to cover from the early morning set up of the course as participants start to arrive to finishers celebrating with sweet corn, pulled pork sandwiches and maybe even a beer in a fun party type atmosphere at the end.  The event has the same race director, Sean Ryan, as the Green Bay Cellcom Marathon so it has that same high energy fun atmosphere as that race for both fans and participants.

For this race I covered it as a team effort with Tom Lynn.  Tom and I have worked on projects together since he was staffer at the Milwaukee Journal in the early 80s and I was an intern.  Tom and I both covered the pre race atmosphere, but then split off approaching the start of the swim from different angles.  I waded out in to the water to get up close and personal with the swimmers and Tom worked it with a long lens from a pier out ahead of the racers.  After that I stayed in near the start finish area at Murphy Park and worked the transition areas and some of the course while Tom ventured out on to the bike and run courses to capture those views.

Wisconsin Motorsports Photographer • Photos From The NASCAR Nationwide series Johnsonville Sausage 200

I don’t get assigned to shoot auto racing often, but when I do it’s a nice change of pace from the other commercial and editorial photography that I do.   Here are some of my favorite photos from covering AJ Allmendinger as he won the NASCAR Nationwide series Johnsonville Sausage 200 presented by Menards at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis. on Saturday, June, 22, 2013.

Road America is a great road course and is an easy track to work at.  I was able to get great access to Allmendinger from the time he arrived at his car for qualifying to when he got out of the car to wave the checkered flag in victory circle.

Here are some of my favorite photos from the day.

Wisconsin Education Photographer • Working with light, shadow and details at St. Norbert College.

Last week before the Green Bay, Wisconsin area turned back in to a rain forrest I spent a few hours on the campus of St Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin updating a few previous photos of mine for the college’s view book.   The creative on the project had a couple specific shot he needed.  I believe I got what he wanted, but I always try to look for a few photos the client doesn’t expect or a different way of look at something they have seen many times before.   Here are a few of my favorite photos from the couple hours on campus playing with light, shadow and details.

Midwest Travel Photographer • Photos From My Two Week Trek Through Germany

My wife Judy and I recently returned from a two week trek through Germany and just a tad in to Austria.  The trip was split between time visiting family on my mom’s side that lives near Frankfurt and working on a project for Schreiber Foods at three of their plants near the Germany / Austria border near the Bodensee.  When I wasn’t working on the project for Schreiber I enjoyed taking pictures just to fill my creative needs.  These are some of my favorite photos from our visits to places like Lindau, the Bodensee, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the Rhein River Valley, Frankfurt, Freiburg and the Black Forrest.

I didn’t load myself down with gear like I might for an editorial or commercial shoot.  I usually carried one camera body with a 24-105 or two tilt shift lenses (a 24mm and a 90mm).  The lilt shift lenses let me work with selective focus which I think works to make Europe look even more magical.

Thanks for taking a look!

Photos From The 2013 Cellcom Green Bay Marathon.

Photography is about telling stories through moments.  I’ve been telling the story of the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon since it’s inception in 2000 for the marathon and it’s title sponsor.   The race is a fun community even that begins and ends at Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers.  Runners get to do a lap around the field inside the stadium before they make their final dash across the parking lot to a waiting tailgate party with brats, beer and music.    My job on race day is to tell the story of the average runner.  I do try and get shots of the elite athletes at the beginning of the race, but after that I concentrate on the average runners and their fans as they trek through the Green Bay area.

I like to photography with as long of a lens as possible, usually with a 400mm F2.8, using shallow depth of field so I can isolate the runner or the fan and capture that moment in the race.  Here are some of my favorite moments from the race.  If you would like to see more of my photos from the day you can visit my online gallery.
