Hi, I'm Mike Roemer, a commercial, corporate, industrial, agriculture and editorial photographer based in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
I've lived the photography business since childhood, first tagging along during my father's long newspaper photography career before ever carrying my own camera gear. My interest grew as I watched the fascinating process of my dad making black and white images appear while shaking trays of chemicals under the red lights of a developing room.
My professional career started with a ten-year stint as a newspaper photographer meeting tight deadlines, adapting to curve balls and making the famous and not-so-famous comfortable in front of my lens.
I returned to Green Bay in the mid-1990s to start my own business, and now regularly travel around the U.S. and internationally for my clients. I enjoy the creative challenge of combining unusual angles, lighting and lens options to produce the perfect commercial image.
I've won first place awards in Pictures of the Year International, National Press Photographers Best of Photojournalism and National Headliners, along with being a three-time winner in the Pro Football Hall of Fame photo contest.
I love the variety of projects I get to work on, from healthcare organization and foundation annual reports, high-energy casino and gaming shoots, industrial projects at locations as diverse as cheese manufacturers and steel plants, to corporate culture assignments and documenting the Green Bay Packers.

Great photography sometimes requires extensive planning and previsualization. Sometimes great photography requires luck and just being in the right place at the right time. I’m not saying this photo is great, but I sure like it and I’ve gotten a great deal of positive comments since I posted it to social media. So here is the back story to the photo.
This summer I’ve been spending a great deal of time working on various projects for a client in southeast Missouri. I’ve made the 1,400 mile round trip trek with my crew five times so far since the middle of June and we have one more trip to do before the end of September. Well, when you’ve driven that same stretch of road so many times you can get a little bored and stir crazy. So, last night around sunset I had woken up from a little nap in the passenger seat as my assistant navigated the truck through central Wisconsin. The sky looked rather ominous so I grabbed my iPhone to try and get a cool picture of the sky. I was messing around a little as we hurled down the highway just a tad over the speed limit when I saw a cool looking barn coming up with “Thank You Farmers” painted on it. My timing is pretty darn good with a DSLR after shooting sports since the mid 80s, but timing a shot with a cell phone is tad of a challenge. I had one shot at this shot. I wasn’t going to be able to convince my assistant or stylist to pull over and let me spend some time with the barn. Well, I got lucky I think. This is my composition at 72ish mph.

For the past couple of years I have had the opportunity to work on a portrait project on the Green Bay Phoenix D1 basketball teams. The project has it’s constrains on time, location and budget, but other than that I can be as creative as time allows. I usually only get an hour for two players and I need to get 3 or 4 different situation per player and a couple shots of the two together. My assistant and I set up a number of shooting areas that will easily allow us to move around and get the variation of shots the client wants. All of that prep of lighting and previsualization is very important, but the other very important thing is to make the subjects feel comfortable in front of the camera and to bring out their personality. That can be tough to do in a limited amount of time, but for this project the athletes were great to work with and I think I captured their personalities. When you get a seven footer Alec Brown breaking out in an impromptu juggling of three basketball, sisters Megan and Kaili Lukan teasing one another like sisters do or Breannah Ranger tossing out her big laughing smile and messing around it takes some of the pressure off the photographer.
Here are a few shots from my sportrait photo shoot with the athletes.

The Green Bay Packers lost to the Arizona Cardinals 17-0 at Lambeau Field on Saturday night August 9, 2013 to kick off the preseason. It was the first time the Packers had been shut out in a preseason game since Hector was a pup and they played half their games at County Stadium in Milwaukee. I started my day at Lambeau by heading to the newly opened south end zone expansion and getting the view of the field from up there. I really like the shot I got of Packers kicker Mason Crosby warming up from mid field right in the middle of the Packers G. It was also one of the first times most season ticket holder would get to sit in their new seats so I tried to record that. As for the game I did okay if what your trying to do is get the scoring plays. I got some nice action and reaction of the Cardinals touchdowns. Maybe my favorite photo from the game is Packers offensive lineman Josh Sitton modeling a Gilligan style Packers hat while spitting.
I’ll be on the road for a week long out of state commercial photo shoot when the Packers play their next preseason game at Lambeau and I’m okay with that. I’m looking forward to the start of the regular season and the excitement that brings.
