Wisconsin Editorial Photographer and Wisconsin Commercial Photographer Mike Roemer’s blog.

Hi, I'm Mike Roemer, a commercial, corporate, industrial, agriculture and editorial photographer based in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

I've lived the photography business since childhood, first tagging along during my father's long newspaper photography career before ever carrying my own camera gear. My interest grew as I watched the fascinating process of my dad making black and white images appear while shaking trays of chemicals under the red lights of a developing room.

My professional career started with a ten-year stint as a newspaper photographer meeting tight deadlines, adapting to curve balls and making the famous and not-so-famous comfortable in front of my lens.

I returned to Green Bay in the mid-1990s to start my own business, and now regularly travel around the U.S. and internationally for my clients. I enjoy the creative challenge of combining unusual angles, lighting and lens options to produce the perfect commercial image.

I've won first place awards in Pictures of the Year International, National Press Photographers Best of Photojournalism and National Headliners, along with being a three-time winner in the Pro Football Hall of Fame photo contest.

I love the variety of projects I get to work on, from healthcare organization and foundation annual reports, high-energy casino and gaming shoots, industrial projects at locations as diverse as cheese manufacturers and steel plants, to corporate culture assignments and documenting the Green Bay Packers.

Photos From The Green Bay Packers vs Philadelphia Eagles NFL Football Game • November 18, 2014 • Green Bay Sports Photographer

The Green Bay Packers have been on a roll the last two week in two consecutive home games at Lambeau Field in Green bay, Wisconsin.  In those two weeks they have outscored their opponents 108-34.  As a sports photographer it’s always exciting to photograph a high scoring game, but it has gotten a little boring in the fourth quarter of those games with the Packers ahead with a demand lead.  This week the Packers defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 53-20 in a game that not only did the offense score, but special teams also scored with a punt return and the defense scored two touchdowns. I had two of the big non offensive scores come right in to my lap with Julius Peppers interception for a touchdown and Micah Hyde’s punt return for touchdown.  The Packers play the Minnesota Viking on the road this weekend before taking on another hot NFL team, the New England Patriots.

Here are some of my favorite photos from the game.

Photos From The Green Bay Packers vs Chicago Bears NFL Football Game • November 9, 2014 • Green Bay Sports Photographer

I love covering a well fought athletic battle as a sports photographer and telling the story with images of the key plays, celebrations and dejection.  Sunday night’s Chicago Bears vs Green Bay Packers NFL football game at Lambeau Field had all of those elements in the first half, as the Packers beat up on the Bears 55-14.  It was exciting to watch Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers throw six touchdown passes in the first half.  During halftime, members of my team planned how we would cover Rodgers if he tied the NFL record for touchdown passes in a game with one more in the second half and claiming the record outright with two more passes.  Sadly that game plan was useless when the Packers showed mercy on the Bears by pulling Rodgers after the first series of the second half.  At that point, covering the game was just about as exciting as covering a preseason game.

Here are some of my favorite photos from the Packers beat down of the Bears.

Portrait Photography For Green Bay Basketball • Wisconsin Sport Photographer

Being an alumni of the University of Wisconsin Green Bay, the Green Bay Phoenix basketball programs have always been near and dear to me.  I started covering the program as a students in the early 80s and have watched it go from a D3 program to D1.  I was away from Green Bay in the mid 80s to the mid 90s, so I had to watch the “glory years” during the Bennett era for the men’s program from afar.  The women’s program has had a great deal of success and it’s been exciting to watch them put together teams that have made it to the NCAA tournament most years.  The men’s program had one of their players, Alec Brown, get drafted in to the NBA this summer after winning the Horizon League last year; it looks like they can be a serious contender for it again this year with Kiefer Sykes, one of the best guards in the nation, leading the team.

For the past few years, I’ve worked on a sports portrait project (“sportrait”) for the athletic department that is used in different ways to promote the programs.  The students are always a pleasure to work with and it’s enjoyable to bring out a little of their personalty when I put them in front of my lens.  Here is a sampling of some of my favorite photos from a number of different situations we put the athletes through.

I’ll be heading to my courtside shooting position in about a week to start documenting what should be an exciting year.

Environmental Portrait Project • Wisconsin Healthcare Photographer

I was recently approached by Agnesian Healthcare to photograph a series of environmental portraits for an ad campaign revolving around cancer patient success stories.  I love photographing real people on location and telling their stories, so I knew this would be a healthcare photography project I would really enjoy.  The marketing team for the Fond du Lac, Wisconsin based healthcare system came up with some great subjects and locations which made my job even easier.  Designer Matt Bellisle of Gravity DSN did a great job creating the pieces.  Hair and makeup stylist Jai Schmidt of Refashioned by Jai did an awesome job of making the subjects look their best on a hot and humid mid-summer day.
