Wisconsin Editorial Photographer and Wisconsin Commercial Photographer Mike Roemer’s blog.

Hi, I'm Mike Roemer, a commercial, corporate, industrial, agriculture and editorial photographer based in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

I've lived the photography business since childhood, first tagging along during my father's long newspaper photography career before ever carrying my own camera gear. My interest grew as I watched the fascinating process of my dad making black and white images appear while shaking trays of chemicals under the red lights of a developing room.

My professional career started with a ten-year stint as a newspaper photographer meeting tight deadlines, adapting to curve balls and making the famous and not-so-famous comfortable in front of my lens.

I returned to Green Bay in the mid-1990s to start my own business, and now regularly travel around the U.S. and internationally for my clients. I enjoy the creative challenge of combining unusual angles, lighting and lens options to produce the perfect commercial image.

I've won first place awards in Pictures of the Year International, National Press Photographers Best of Photojournalism and National Headliners, along with being a three-time winner in the Pro Football Hall of Fame photo contest.

I love the variety of projects I get to work on, from healthcare organization and foundation annual reports, high-energy casino and gaming shoots, industrial projects at locations as diverse as cheese manufacturers and steel plants, to corporate culture assignments and documenting the Green Bay Packers.

Tis The Season For Creating Christmas Cards • Wisconsin Monsoon Photographer

Tis the season for creating holiday cards.  I had a creative block for my sister-in-law and her kids card, but it came to me on Sunday afternoon as I shot a football game in a monsoon.  Joan and her kids are up for just about anything for their card and give me creative control.  To pull off this shot I mounted a handheld strobe inside the umbrella to light the faces and lovely holiday sweaters and then backlite the rain with another strobe.  Luckily we have a warm water supply in our garage so the simulated rain I pelted them with wasn’t all that cold. Green Bay is in the midst of the wettest December on record so I though the greeting “Let the holiday spirit rain down on you” would be appropiate.

The Green Bay Packers and running back Eddie Lacy got back on track Sunday December 13, 2015 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin by defeating the Dallas Cowboys 28-7.  Lacy ran for 124 yards on 24 carries to help pound out a successful ground game with the help of James Starks.  The win puts the Packers one game ahead of the Minnesota Viking in the race for the NFC North with three games remaining.  The rainy game with temps in the 50s was the warmers December game ever played at Lambeau.  I was less then excited to shoot my second game in a row in monsoon conditions, but I fared much better then last game on keeping myself and my gear dry thanks to less wind and a milder rain.  Here are a few of my favorite photos from the game.

Be Creative And Give The Client Something They Didn’t Expect • Wisconsin Manufacturing Photographer

It’s not a new concept; when I shoot an assignment, I get the client the photos they expect and need.  But I also try to be creative and give them something they didn’t expect and hopefully, love.  For a recent industrial photography shoot, we got the client the shots they needed and wanted, but then we had a little down time that we used to find creative ways to light a few areas and capture a different angle and lens compression looks at one of their machines.  For the exterior machine shot below, we backed up and out of the building we were shooting in and set up our camera half way out in a parking lot.  We shot through a large overhead door so that we could capture an image of the machine with a long lens.  Doing this helped clean up the area and bring the focus on the massive scope of the machine.  My assistant was willing to toss on a lab coat and pair of safety glasses and jump in to the shot to help establish the machine’s size in proportion to a person.  For the shot inside the machine, we dug through a grip kit I keep in my truck and found just the right suction cups and mounting systems to mount and hide some small lights to add dimension and color to what could have been a boring photo.

Photos From The Green Bay Packers vs Chicago Bear NFL Thanksgiving Monsoon Football Game • November 26, 2015 • Green Bay Editorial Photographer

I usually try and do my blog post from covering a Green Bay Packers game the day after the game.  Sorry this one from the Green Bay Packers vs Chicago Bears game on Thanksgiving night is a few days late.  It’s taken me almost a full week to come to grips with the Packers losing their second home game in a row to a division rival and it’s taken me almost that long to dry out from the wettest game I’ve covered in my over 20 years of covering the Packers.  The Packers Thanksgiving game wasn’t you average game either.  At halftime the Packers honored Super Bowl and future Hall of Fame quarterback quarterback Brett Favre by retiring his number and unveiling his name and number in the stadiums ring of honor.  To make it even more special Ice Bowl era quarterback Bart Starr also stepped foot on the field for what his family says will be his last trip back to Green Bay.

For about a week before the game I nervously looked at the extended forecast and saw the potential for rain and temps in the mid 30s.  I don’t mind shooting in the cold, but I hate shooting in the rain.  The morning of game day the weather was gloomy and damp and I thought to myself if it stays like this the game it won’t be bad.  Well, the weather didn’t just stay damp and gloomy.  About mid afternoon what I will call the Great Thanksgiving Monsoon of 2015 moved in.  I have the proper gear to keep myself and my great dry, but when your out in the elements for over 5 hours covering pregame and the actual game it’s a tad tough to keep all your glass from becoming a sponge.  I brought a fleet of lens clothes with to clear the water from my camera lenses and eye glasses, but with the wind and the rain it was a never ending H2Oapalooza.  By halftime my lens clothes had become just damp wash clothes.  When the special moments at halftime happened I couldn’t even really see through my gear.

At some point during a difficult situation you just have to say ”UNCLE”.  I said uncle about midway through the 4th quarter and just wanted the game to end before I laid down in the north end zone in the fetus position.  Well, the game did end and not in a good way for the Packers.  I waddled my damp self up to the media workroom and rung myself out and was happy to see that the editors found a couple nice moment in my take from the day.

I usually caption all the photos from the games, but not from this one.  I just need to get this blog done as quick as possible and move on.  Hopefully the Packers move on this week and kick the Lions and get their season back on track.

Photos From The Green Bay Packers vs Detroit Lions NFL Football Game • November 15, 2015 • Green Bay Editorial Photographer

Sunday November 15, 2015 was not a good day for the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.  The Packers had issues in very aspect of the game and lost to one of the worse teams in the NFL, division rival the Detroit Lions.  The Lions snapped a 24 game losing streak in Wisconsin dating back to 1991.  The Packers mounted a late game coming back, but it failed with a missed field goal in the final seconds.  Here is my visual take on the game.

The Packers who just a few weeks ago had a two game lead in the division and tied for the best record in the NFC find themselves in second place in the division after a three game losing streak.  Next up for the Packers is a trek to Minnesota to take on the division leading Vikings.
