Wisconsin Editorial Photographer and Wisconsin Commercial Photographer Mike Roemer’s blog.

Hi, I'm Mike Roemer, a commercial, corporate, industrial, agriculture and editorial photographer based in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

I've lived the photography business since childhood, first tagging along during my father's long newspaper photography career before ever carrying my own camera gear. My interest grew as I watched the fascinating process of my dad making black and white images appear while shaking trays of chemicals under the red lights of a developing room.

My professional career started with a ten-year stint as a newspaper photographer meeting tight deadlines, adapting to curve balls and making the famous and not-so-famous comfortable in front of my lens.

I returned to Green Bay in the mid-1990s to start my own business, and now regularly travel around the U.S. and internationally for my clients. I enjoy the creative challenge of combining unusual angles, lighting and lens options to produce the perfect commercial image.

I've won first place awards in Pictures of the Year International, National Press Photographers Best of Photojournalism and National Headliners, along with being a three-time winner in the Pro Football Hall of Fame photo contest.

I love the variety of projects I get to work on, from healthcare organization and foundation annual reports, high-energy casino and gaming shoots, industrial projects at locations as diverse as cheese manufacturers and steel plants, to corporate culture assignments and documenting the Green Bay Packers.

Photos From The Green Bay Packers vs Detroit Lions NFL Football Game • September 25, 2016 • Wisconsin Editorial Photographer

The Green Bay Packers finally had their home opener after starting the season with two games on the road.  Packers’ quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the rest of the Packers offense had something to prove after having two games with sluggish offense.  Rodgers was back to his MVP form in their 34-27 win over the Detroit Lions with four first half touchdowns and Packers wide receiver Jordy Nelson is getting back to his pre knee injury self with 11 catches for 105 yards and two touchdowns.

I felt like I didn’t have my best game, but after editing I was happy with my photos from the day.  Let’s hope the Packers come back from the bye week continuing their winning ways in three consecutive games at Lambeau Field.

Taking On A Large Scale Product Photography Project – Wisconsin Product Photographer

Earlier this year I was approached to take on a rather large product photography project.  The project consisted of around 600 different product numbers.  The final files all needed to be on a white background with a clipping path and a drop shadow added.  To complicate things, some of the product numbers had multiple items in them with different reflective qualities; this made lighting the objects an even bigger challenge.  To keep me learning and happy as a photographer, I like to be shooting a variety of things.   My “brand” of work is often thought of as capturing people more so than products.  I knew this project was large and would require more than just my skills, so I reached out to others within my professional circle that have the skill set to help Mike Roemer Photography deliver the quality of images the client required.  The first person I contacted was Bill Dais of Dais Design who I’ve worked with over the years on various projects, a number of them industrial and product photography projects similar to this.  The next step in assembling my team was a little tough to swallow; I also brought in someone else as the actual photographer.  I reached out to Todd Truttmann, a product photographer based in Green Bay and someone with a great deal of experience shooting products for companies like Target.  Todd and I have known one another since our college days.  When Todd’s not shooting, he’s even nice enough to assist me on various commercial shoots as a lighting assistant.  Todd has an arsenal of tricks he uses with various lighting techniques that made this project shine.  Having Todd as the photographer allowed me to serve as the project manager and digital tech to make sure we kept things flowing without a hitch.

In the end after we jumped over a few hurdles, I think we made some nice images and most importantly, we had a happy client.  Below is a sampling of the variety of images.

Building A Library Of Images • Midwest Industrial Photographer

Other than my hair not doing very well when I need to wear a hardhat all day, I love to shoot industrial photography.  Here are shots from a recent commercial photography photo shoot I did for a corporate client to help them build a library of images for their web site and social media.    We shot all of these on a working plant floor without interrupting their production.  I think the reason I like these shots best is that I was able to either draw out a little of the personality of the employee or I was able to bring in a graphic element.

Photos From The 2016 Cellcom Green Bay Marathon Wisconsin Sports Photographer

Here are some of my favorite photos from the 2016 Cellcom Green Bay Marathon and half marathon on Sunday May 22nd in Green Bay, Wisconsin.  Both races start and finish outside Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers, and the runners even take a loop around the field on their final mile of the run.  The runners and fans are treated to a party in the parking lot with the staples of a Packers tailgate party:  beer and brats.  I like to tell the story of the day through the emotion of the runners, but I also like looking for unique signs fans display to make the day more fun.  This is the 16th time I’ve covered this race, so I was looking for some different vantage points.  Both races start in waves, so I used a lift to get myself high above the start line.  I think this gave me some different looking shots than I’ve gotten in the past either from ground level or from a ladder.  I also spent more time on the half marathon course after hearing about how a neighborhood came out to support runners by placing sprinklers midway through the race on a particularly hilly part of the course to help them combat the heat.

So here are some of my favorite photos from the races. Thanks for looking!

Wisconsin Education Photographer • St Norbert College Graduation

This past weekend I had the opportunity to photograph the commencement ceremonies for St Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin.  This year’s graduation was a little different then ones I’ve covered in the past with it being held outside.  With the regular venue the Schuldes Sports Center undergoing a major renovation the college decide to hold their first outdoor graduation in 40 years.  The outdoor location made for some different and nice angles and moments.  Here are some of my favorite photos for the day.
