Wisconsin Editorial Photographer and Wisconsin Commercial Photographer Mike Roemer’s blog.

Hi, I'm Mike Roemer, a commercial, corporate, industrial, agriculture and editorial photographer based in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

I've lived the photography business since childhood, first tagging along during my father's long newspaper photography career before ever carrying my own camera gear. My interest grew as I watched the fascinating process of my dad making black and white images appear while shaking trays of chemicals under the red lights of a developing room.

My professional career started with a ten-year stint as a newspaper photographer meeting tight deadlines, adapting to curve balls and making the famous and not-so-famous comfortable in front of my lens.

I returned to Green Bay in the mid-1990s to start my own business, and now regularly travel around the U.S. and internationally for my clients. I enjoy the creative challenge of combining unusual angles, lighting and lens options to produce the perfect commercial image.

I've won first place awards in Pictures of the Year International, National Press Photographers Best of Photojournalism and National Headliners, along with being a three-time winner in the Pro Football Hall of Fame photo contest.

I love the variety of projects I get to work on, from healthcare organization and foundation annual reports, high-energy casino and gaming shoots, industrial projects at locations as diverse as cheese manufacturers and steel plants, to corporate culture assignments and documenting the Green Bay Packers.

Luckily The Squirrel Added Some Excitement Green Bay Packers vs Indianapolis Colts NFL Football Photos • Wisconsin Sports Photographer

Another tough day at Lambeau Field for the Green Bay Packers.  As quarterback Aaron Rodgers said,  the team had a “lack of juice”.  That lack of juice resulted in a 31-26 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.  As a photographer, the most exciting part of the game was the numerous times a squirrel came out and ran around the field to a cheering crowd.

Here are my top shots from the game with maybe my favorite being Datone Jones trying to capture the squirrel in his helmet.

Wisconsin Event Photographer • Photos From The Door County Fall 50

Update :  I’ve had a number of people reach out to see if they can purchase photos from the race.  You can go to this link to purchase photos from race.

This past weekend I photographed a running race that was a little different for me.  I’ve covered plenty of marathons, 5ks, 10ks, etc, but this was my first team event.  The race was the Door County Fall 50 which starts in Gills Rock, Wisconsin, at the tip of the Door County Peninsula, and ends 50 scenic miles south in Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin.  This year’s race included 460 teams of mostly five runners and 97 solo runners.  This race is in it’s eleventh year and is very popular; the team portion sold out in 20 minutes at high noon on April Fools’ Day, the day it always opens up for registration.

Many of the teams dressed up in costume partially due to the proximity of Halloween, but more importantly to try and win the all important costume contest at the post race party.  Speaking of post race party, you won’t find a crazier party at any running event.  The party was held in 30,000 square feet of outdoor tents with 100 feet of bar rail, including five beer wagons and 120 feet of pizza buffet line.  This year, the racers quenched their thirst and hunger with 650 20-inch pizzas, 60 half barrels of beer and 30 cases of wine.

Race director Sean Ryan says the race started with 35 teams and 25 solo runners and doubled in size for the first four years, after which he had to impose a cap to keep down the traffic and control the chaos.  Some elements that have been added over the years are a dance floor, projected images on the ceiling of the party tent, gold solo runner medals, best team name and best costumed team contests, largely based on participant suggestion.  Medals on chains were always a hallmark of the race.  The new slogan for the race is “Scenic Run, Epic Fun!”.

Here are some of my favorite photos from the race.

Photos From The Green Bay Packers vs Dallas Cowboys NFL Football Game • October 16th, 2016 • Green Bay Photographer

The Packers didn’t play well on Sunday and they lost to the Dallas Cowboys 30-16 at Lambeau Field in Green bay, Wisconsin.  The Cowboys led by rookie quarterback Dak Prescott made less mistakes and had fewer turnovers then the Packers and came out on top.

I felt like I had an okay game and got a few of the key moments, mostly being the turnovers.  The afternoon was topped off by Hall Of Fame quarterback back Brett Favre spending a few minutes on the field at half time after being inducted in to the hall this past summer.

Here are some of my favorite shots form the day!

Photos From The Green Bay Packers vs New York Giants NFL Football Game • October 9th, 2016 • Wisconsin Sports Photographer

The Green Bay Packers offense and quarterback Aaron Rodgers still aren’t firing on all cylinders, but they put together enough of a game, with the help of their defense, to defeat Eli Manning and the New York Giants.  The Packers defeated the Giants 23-16 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay Wisconsin to go 3-1 on the season after their early bye week.  My favorite shot of the day would be a toss up between a Clay Matthews sack celebration and when a squirrel ran out on to the field.  Not sure what that says.

Here are my favorite photos from the day.

Wisconsin Sport Photographer • Photography For Green Bay Basketball

I’ve been shooting for the athletic department at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay for 20 years. I’ve seen what I photograph change a little and how the photos get used change a lot.  When I first started shooting for Green Bay athletics, the main usage of the photos was for their media guide.  I remember the day I was told that the university, along with many other schools would no longer be printing a media guide.  I thought that was going to be a major hit to the need for photos.  I, as many other photographers at the time, knew of web sites, but social media wasn’t really even on the radar.

Today I see the photos used all over the place in social media and in some very creative and fun ways.  Sure, the photos still get used in some of the old school applications like newspaper adds and billboards, but the beast that it seems we try to feed these days is the internet and social media and I like that beast.  It’s fun for me to see the creative way the athletic department is using the photos.

Once a year, I do a shoot for both the men’s and women’s basketball teams.  This year our goal was to shoot every player on both teams on a white background and to get some serious photos, but also to get some fun shots that bring out the personality of the players.  I gave the players a little direction, but for the most part I just let them roll with whatever they wanted to do. A couple of my favorite shots are ones I captured between individual athletes when groups of students would just mess around.

Here are some of my favorite photos from the day.
