Wisconsin Editorial Photographer and Wisconsin Commercial Photographer Mike Roemer’s blog.

Hi, I'm Mike Roemer, a commercial, corporate, industrial, agriculture and editorial photographer based in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

I've lived the photography business since childhood, first tagging along during my father's long newspaper photography career before ever carrying my own camera gear. My interest grew as I watched the fascinating process of my dad making black and white images appear while shaking trays of chemicals under the red lights of a developing room.

My professional career started with a ten-year stint as a newspaper photographer meeting tight deadlines, adapting to curve balls and making the famous and not-so-famous comfortable in front of my lens.

I returned to Green Bay in the mid-1990s to start my own business, and now regularly travel around the U.S. and internationally for my clients. I enjoy the creative challenge of combining unusual angles, lighting and lens options to produce the perfect commercial image.

I've won first place awards in Pictures of the Year International, National Press Photographers Best of Photojournalism and National Headliners, along with being a three-time winner in the Pro Football Hall of Fame photo contest.

I love the variety of projects I get to work on, from healthcare organization and foundation annual reports, high-energy casino and gaming shoots, industrial projects at locations as diverse as cheese manufacturers and steel plants, to corporate culture assignments and documenting the Green Bay Packers.

Getting Creative At A Chemical Plant • Midwest Industrial Photographer

It’s been a busy summer of shooting and I’m just starting to get my head above water to blog from some of my editorial photography and commercial photography photoshoots.  Here are some of my favorite photos from an interesting and challenging industrial photo shoot we did for a chemical company.  The client was looking to build a library of images for various uses to tell the story of their plant and employees.  The client was open to just about any creative direction we suggested, the employees were very cooperative and we had access to lifts to give us a little different view on things.  What more could a photographer ask for?

Here are some of my favorite photos from the chemical plant photography shoot.

Time To Knock The Rust Off • Wisconsin Editorial Photographer

It’s that time of year again for me to knock the rust off my football shooting skills.  Last Thursday I shot the Green Bay Packers vs. the Philadelphia Eagles NFL pre-season football game at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.  Most years I’ll try to go to a practice or two to refresh my football shooting skills, but this year for a number of reasons I couldn’t find the time.  For the most part I was happy with my photos from the game given – in my opinion – the lack of action and excitement typical of an NFL preseason game. This will be the only game I shoot before the real season kicks off in less than a month so I guess I better be ready.  I think my shooting skills are ready; I’m just not sure my knees are ready to kneel for three plus hours.

So here are some of my favorite images for the Packers Eagles game!

Texas In Black And White • Midwest Travel Photographer

During a recent industrial photography photo shoot near Stephenville, Texas, one of my responsibilities was to get out into the community and tell the story of the city and surrounding area. My assistant and I traveled the back roads of rural Texas between shooting for our client at a manufacturing plant and a distribution center.  We weren’t just looking for amazing BBQ, but also for photos that depict life in this part of Texas.  While editing these photos, I played around with a few of them in black and white and really liked the results.  It took me back to the early days of my photography career when all I shot was black and white.  I even had a circular outline in my back jean pocket that everyone thought was from chew, but actually was from a red filter to toss on my wide angle lens when I wanted to darken the sky.  Today I can get that same look with a little help from Photoshop, which is nice.

Here are some of my favorite shots turned black and white.

Telling The Story Of A City • Wisconsin Travel Photographer

During a recent industrial photography photo shoot near Leon, Mexico, one of my responsibilities was also to get out into the community and tell the story of the city and surrounding areas.  We traveled to an area about an hour from the plant called San Miguel de Allende.  This is a smallercity with a lot of history and a lot of American expats.  We also visited the city of Guanajuato, which is the capital of the state of Guanajuato, and picturesquely set in a narrow valley allowing for some great elevated views, dotted with colorful buildings.  The city of Leon, which is the 4th largest city in Mexico with around 1.5 million people, provided an interesting juxtaposition of old and new.

Here are some of my favorite photos from that shoot!

Midwest Industrial Photographer • Happy Impromptu Moment

During a recent industrial photography shoot in Mexico, I came away with a shot that I really like. The photo isn’t anything great technically, but a nice moment between a group of happy workers. During a break shooting environmental portraits and video interviews, I ventured around areas like offices, meeting rooms and the lunch room looking for some candid moments. While in the lunch room, I saw this group of workers who had just come in from the production floor eyeing me up and trying to figure out what I was doing. I made eye contact, smiled back, and one of them struck a pose kiddingly for a photo. I shot a couple frames as the rest of the group teased him and then I gave the international arm signal to get together in a group. My sign language worked which resulted in this wonderful, happy impromptu moment with this group of workers. I just love the smiles, the casual feel and the happiness of the group.
